Freddie Jackson, the Grammy-nominated R&B singer behind 1980s hits “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” has died. His family said via his official Instagram account that Jackson died Monday, three days after his 70th birthday; no cause of death was provided. The family statement called him “more than a legendary voice” and said details regarding arrangements will be announced in the coming days. Jackson was born and raised in Harlem, sang gospel at White Rock Baptist Church, and built his early career in the New York club scene before joining the band Mystic Merlin in the late 1970s. His 1985 debut album Rock Me Tonight was certified platinum and produced two Grammy nominations, including best new artist and best male R&B vocal performance for “You Are My Lady.” His 1987 sophomore album Just Like the First Time was also certified platinum. In 2024 Jackson disclosed a diagnosis of kidney disease and said he had partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness.
