At a Tuesday press briefing about the closed Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery merger, Skydance chief executive David Ellison denied he has "politicized" the newly formed media conglomerate despite saying he has a "good relationship with this administration." Ellison named past ties with President Biden, Senator Tim Scott, and Governor Gavin Newsom and said "we want to speak to everybody" while insisting the company would not be politicized. Asked about conversations with President Trump regarding CNN, Ellison declined to discuss specifics and said the company has not spoken to any political leader about news beyond asserting a commitment to "truth" and "complete editorial independence." Ellison pledged that both CNN and CBS News would remain "completely editorially independent" and endorsed the leaders he tapped to run those outlets, CNN chief executive Mark Thompson and CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. On potential consolidation or cost savings from merging news operations, Ellison said leadership will spend the next several months "getting under the hood" and that most of the roughly $6 billion in expected merger savings would not come from job cuts. Ellison reiterated the company wants to "be in the trust business" and asked detractors for time to prove editorial independence as executives assess any synergies.
