A’ja Wilson won the WNBA MVP for a third straight year and a record fifth time overall, becoming the first player in league history to three-peat. Wilson received a congratulatory voice message from former US vice-president Kamala Harris and accepted the trophy from her mother Eva while Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, Aces owner Mark Davis and team president Nikki Fargas looked on. The 30-year-old led the league at 26.2 points per game while shooting 52.9% from the field, averaging 9.4 rebounds, a career-best 3.2 assists and 1.9 blocks. Wilson expanded her range, shooting a career-best 40.4% from three and making 38 three-pointers, and her 22.1 career scoring average is now the highest in WNBA history. She scored at least 30 points in 13 games, tying the single-season record she set last year, posted 33 games of 20-plus points and led the league with 19 20/10 double-doubles. Wilson’s season included a 45-point game on May 15 against Connecticut, she climbed from 21st to 11th on the league’s all-time scoring list and now sits 12 points shy of Sue Bird for 10th, and the defending champion Las Vegas Aces finished the regular season 31-13 but trail Golden State 2-0 in their WNBA semi-final series ahead of Game 3 at home on Friday.
