A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and wounded a man in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx on Thursday afternoon during an enforcement operation, federal officials and New York police said. The man, identified by police as 28 years old, was conscious and taken to hospital; early reports said a five-year-old child was in the vehicle and was physically unharmed. The New York Police Department said the shooting occurred at roughly 4pm and located the child with a family member after a wellness check. The Department of Homeland Security said officers were targeting an undocumented man from the Dominican Republic and alleged the man had gang associations and prior convictions, without naming him or providing evidence. Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the shooting as unconscionable, said he had spoken with President Trump and Homeland Security secretary Mullin trying to secure the man’s release, and demanded that ICE stop enforcement actions in New York City after those negotiations were unsuccessful. Cellphone video published by the New York Times and other outlets showed agents in the street after the shooting, one holding what appeared to be an assault rifle and another restraining a man, and witnesses and local outlets reported bullet holes in the SUV windshield. Protesters gathered near the scene holding signs calling for accountability and for ICE to leave the neighborhood.
