Tories overstated net zero cost by nearly £500bn after spreadsheet error

politicsOct 9, 202619892

Kemi Badenoch’s flagship conference policy document The Right Way cites a £957bn estimate for the cost of reaching net zero by 2050, nearly £500bn higher than the Climate Change Committee’s figures after an apparent spreadsheet double-counting error. The Tory document quotes the CCC’s Sixth Carbon Budget and repeats the £957bn figure as a net cost after savings, but the committee’s own spreadsheet actually totals £478bn; the excess arose because a totals row was included in a column sum. Carbon Brief spotted the mistake and alerted the Guardian. The policy paper used the inflated figure to help justify the Conservatives’ decision to scrap the 2050 net zero target. The CCC said it does not recognise the £957bn number and reiterated an earlier offer to meet Badenoch to walk through its advice. The committee’s most recent analysis puts the expected gross cost of net zero at about £110bn, roughly £4bn a year or 0.2 percent of GDP.

Tories overstate net zero cost by nearly £500bn in apparent spreadsheet error. Same error amplified by right-wing think-tanks, press It suited their ideological leanings. Future historians might say - planet earth and human life was shattered by a spreadsheet error.
