Sacha Baron Cohen will headline Quentin Tarantino’s play The Popinjay Cavalier when it premieres at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End on 18 March 2027. The production is Tarantino’s first work written for the stage and he will also direct; previews are scheduled to begin on 23 February 2027 and tickets go on sale Monday. Set in 1830s Europe, the play is billed as a "rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise" inspired by classic swashbuckling epics and the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda and Jesse Lasky Jr. Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions are producing the show. Tarantino, 63, said he is "keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out." Baron Cohen, 54, said he was "beyond delighted" and quipped that he said yes before Tarantino finished his first expletive, adding that they would be "losing our West End virginity together." Sony chairman Tom Rothman and producer Sonia Friedman praised Tarantino’s rehearsal work with actors, fencers, acrobats and musicians and called Baron Cohen a "fearless, brilliantly inventive actor" suited to the role.
