Tom Cruise's new satirical black comedy Digger, directed by Alejandro G Iñárritu, plunged about 60% in its second weekend and has taken roughly $35m worldwide to date. Analysts cited by BBC and Variety estimate the film could lose about $245m after Warner Bros spent near $280m on production and marketing. Variety projects a final worldwide gross around $50m while the film would need roughly $350m to break even; Warner Bros told Variety its break even point is $300m. Digger stars Cruise as oil magnate Digger Rockwell and received generally poor reviews, prompting Warner Bros to launch a renewed marketing push urging audiences to "decide for yourself." The film is the studio's last standalone release before its takeover by Paramount, and its performance sharply contrasts with recent box-office hits in Cruise's franchise filmography.
