Epic delays its Marvel and Star Wars shooter, pivots to AI-first development
My empathy to the developers, also sad to hear Epic is apparently too low on cash to make good videogames anymore. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Hot on the coattails of the success of Wolverine, Epic answers the age old question: “Can we do worse?”
i'm truly amazed at how efficient fortnite has become at being both a money printer and a money burner. this should not be possible and yet
Money just be pretty tight for them these days. Oh, that reminds me, I haven't claimed my free Epic game this week.
Another trainwreck in slow motion. Step one: Force devs to use more A.I. Step two: Be delayed because the tech isn't working well and you fired everyone it replaced. Step three: Get shuttered because you used A.I. and it didn't work. I'm tired...
And Unity announced this today, too.
Delaying a game to claim you're making the game faster and more efficiently now is the most top down "the boss knows better than all the employees combined cause he's the boss" thing I've read this 5 minutes
Bloomberg: Epic Games is going all in on AI as an unannounced shooter featuring Marvel & Star Wars characters is implementing an "AI first" production model "generated with full AI workflows". "No more hand-written code", said one of the directors to staff. ➡️ www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Well, they better vibe-code some AIs to play whatever garbage is gonna come out of this, because I ain't touching that shit. Oh who am I kidding, this is gonna do major damage to the industry and regular customers will buy it anyway
Again. Gabe does nothing. Still wins.
The people asking for this:
Okay, so no human involvement at all, right? Does this mean it's freely distributable, as no humans can be attributed copyright? I feel like the cost-cutting is going to cut into the revenue here.
That games gonna be all
If they can't be fucked to make it, why should we be fucked to play it? And why would anyone with long-term thinking skills support blatant plagiarism and wage theft, in an industry already rife with shitty business practices and an open disdain for its workforce? Going all-in on LLMs is asinine.
This industry is falling apart We have mass layoffs causing talented people to leave the industry, then we have stuff like this which will cause talented people to leave the industry It absolutely sucks and I hate to see it. AI code is bloated, messy and buggy. These games will suck.
Company putting a gun to its head and laughing like the joker type stuff
Live look at me getting more worked up at every line of this
I won't be checking this garbage out. You can if you want.
Never touched anything made by Epic Games before, and now I never will 😠
Serious question, I was planning to delve into 3D for my next game, and I was considering investigating Unreal Engine and Godot (Unfortunately Unity already shat the bed so that wasn't an option). Are there other viable professional 3D engines for small indie games, or is it just Godot now?
we gotta kill more CEOs man
how to immediately turn me off of a video game: proudly declare its development has an "AI first" mindset
I am personally in favor of this because I think zero day vulnerabilities and rce is funny as fuck and we need more of them in the world
The thing that's going to be hardest about this is raising the next generation of kids to not get sucked into this slop by the marketing just kind of innately working on their dumbest peers and kids not really having any particular reason of their own to resist the resultant ambient peer pressure
I do kind of want to see the Epic Star Wars/Marvel game make a total Concord of itself, if only for the headline "The Game No One Made Was Also The Game No One Played"
Marvel Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Audience
I'm still so sad about Concord. Game that genuinely had a lot of love and thought put into it's world but sadly all that detailed sci fi worldbuilding was wasted on a team hero shooter. The only multiplayer shooter to have in game maps of in-universe ship trade routes.
What do the kids (from 10 years ago) like? Marvel? Star Wars? Here's a Marvel and Star Wars game! This groundbreaking creative idea is worth 100 kajillion dollars!
“Developers on the game, a shooter featuring characters from the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, were instructed to implement an ‘AI first’ production model using tools such as Anthropic's Claude.”
i'm SORRY, the art stuff is disgusting but you're Epic Games working on STAR WARS and you straight up want to hand the leash to Anthropic do you realize how stupid that is do you get you're a company relying on a SINGLE supplier for an entire pipeline do you see how much power this gives them
oh so that's why Disney revealed that Palpatine had returned in (sigh) Fortnite. I'd missed that detail
I'm gonna be honest, besides all the using AI debacle, one thing in particular perplexes me. Aren't they handing industry secrets to a third party by allowing their AI to read the code? 🤨
