BBC to close BBC Three, BBC Scotland and Radio 4 Extra
Closing Radio 4 Extra will not create savings of note. It commissions no original programmes. It pays modest radio royalties, producers and hosts. That's it. So the BBC archive is gonna be left to collect dust?
This is death by 1000 cuts. Radio is the one thing the BBC does better than any of its competitors. It's also the only platform streamers can't seem to pull listeners from. Why join ppl you're already beating? That's not how the saying goes
The irony is that R4E (what was Radio 7 at birth) was castigated on creation for being 'cheap' repeats. It's a terrible day. All notions of curation and the joys or serendipitous discovery destroyed.
I also like with radio that its not gathering data on you while you listen, and I feel like google execs like the one now running BBC probably have no time for providing information without collecting it.
It's about the only reason I have a DAB radio. I get to hear programmes that I wouldn't even have considered going out to find. Meanwhile it can't possibly cost much to run as most of the programming is ancient reruns plus a little intro every half hour.
It pays NO royalties if your original contracts predate the internet. When some of my old radio plays and comedy things get repeats, there’s no payment because the idea of digital repeats didn’t exist when they were recorded. However, it’s still a very bad move to close R4 Extra. Boo.
One of the joys of R4Extra is that it schedules programmes you'd never have discovered otherwise. That's *a lot* of great radio sinking without trace in the archives, including material from newer and less well-known talent.
An awful decision by the BBC imo
I love 4 Extra. It's my favourite radio station. I love how it flows as a linear station. I love how it schedules programmes I'd otherwise never have heard. It's my go-to escape. I'm very sad to read that it is to close.
At least 6 Music seems untouched for now. They'd better keep their damned hands off, or there will be Hell To Pay!
😢 Any one of the Radio 1s could have gone instead and surely would have been missed less
Oh no! Sometimes I tune in and I’m there for hours!
The BBC is removing the things, that stood it apart from the rest. Stats over happiness! For some listeners, who'll now not have the unique place for things some people can't find anywhere else.
Extremely sad. No better station when you're ill in bed. Keeps you company all day, no news to make you miserable. I can only imagine what a joy it is to people with chronic illness.
What! 4 Extra is absolutely essential listening in the car, often to avoid, one thing and another..... So many period pieces, and drama from eras I lived through but were too young to appreciate. This is terrible.
BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra linear channels to go deadline.com/2026/10/bbc-...
BBC Scotland will remain a channel on iPlayer with shows on BBC One and Two. BBC says BBC Three will have increased investment for younger audiences including iPlayer and YouTube. Shows on Radio 4 Extra will be on BBC Sounds.
The BBC Sounds app was one of the most listened to apps in America. And they chose to cut off access vs allowing us to pay to listen to stations like BBC 4 Extra. The self sabotage is like watching a private equity takeover. Absolutely baffling!
Blooddy great. I swear Brittin has just been put in there to accelerate the disintegration process. "We're junking everything that makes us distinguishable from the streamers folks, why don't you go online instead?" has been the messagr since he got there.
I’m sure all the commercial radio stations are rolling up their sleeves ready to open their archives of comedy, drama and documentaries which are either empty, in rights hell or burnt.
BBC Three’s return as a TV channel did not work, but it was brought back because a lot of shows dropped in viewership when the TV channel first closed.
Relaunching BBC Three as a linear channel was one the weirdest bits of BBC logic in years. As an iplayer (or even better, off platform) brand for younger focused content, with a decent commissioning budget, you wonder if it could've done better...
Depressing. I’m glad I got out when I did.
Radio4 Extra?? Bloody hell. Oh well that can fuck off.
This does not surprise me one bit. Once Drag Race finishes, there’s no need for the channel
matt brittin was a google exec alright jfc

Will there be anything left?!
The death of Radio 4 Extra is a very, very sad day. I am genuinely upset by this decison.
Existing on Sounds will mean all notion of curation and any chance for serendipity just ... gone. BBC Radio chasing its tail to be more like their digital competition, rather than distinct from it has lead to this and will lead to greater decay as the months drip painfully by.
BBC 7 was the reason I bought my first DAB radio. Radio 4 Extra was a step down but I could cope. Very disappointed with this and in true Radio 4 fashion I am a bit cross, I may even roll my eyes a bit.
Very sad but credit to Deadline for picking an excellent photo to illustrate the story
Getting rid of Radio 4 Extra is a terrible, terrible decision.
It's the only part of BBC speech radio I still enjoy. What a loss.
I am really bloody cross about this. I feel like I've lost my only source of interesting radio. Yes it's on sounds in a form but the curated days, new archive stuff, all of that lost.
I really can't see how this will save money, its arguably the cheapest station to run and yet gives so much back.
That and Radio 3 are pretty much the only BBC radio stations I listen to, and I think Radio 3's going downhill too.
There used to be a forum where people would upload their own recordings of BBC dramas and other spoken word material. I loved it, but quite understandably, the beeb had it shut down. If they could make the entire spoken word back catalogue available again for free access, I think we'd barely miss 4x
NEW: BBC confirms BBC Three, BBC Scotland, Radio 4 Extra channels to go, but there is an even more worrying development. After all the cuts so far, the BBC is not even HALF WAY to its £500m savings target. Some big calls to come... www.theguardian.com/media/2026/o...
This is effectively the beginning of the end of the best public media production culture in the world. Brexit destroyed the entire country.
If only the UK had a Culture Secretary...
the scale of the required cuts basically mean a smaller BBC that does less and probably does it worse, however senior managers and ministers* choose to dress it up *in a fantasy world where Nandy chooses to do anything at all
BBC News is a good example of big cuts still to come. Today, it has told staff of 100 more job losses, saving £5.5m. That's on top of previous cuts of £25m and £1.8m. But it has to get to a total of £51m in cuts - so still plenty to come next year.
Why is the UK killing one of their biggest sources of soft power
I mean surely shutting down the entirety of BBC News would save a few quid?
Do wish I had a time machine so I could jump forward a decade and see how all the 'shared cultural identity' and 'healthy information landscape' chat is going come 2036
BBC Scotland will close in spring 2027 as part of cost-cutting measures, the corporation has announced 👇 www.thenational.scot/news/2665364...
You cant get online news headlines from Scotland on the website home page, you have to search for it. The channel was rubbish no decent programmes, mostly english centric and the news programmes were propaganda. No loss really...
With a loss of 10 jobs - that shows how little BBC spent on this channel. No wonder it failed.
They should not be allowed to broadcast in Scotland they are under the control of a Far Right Propaganda Machine
Weed out Tory sycophants I’m sure that would save more than 5 million quid
At least the pretence of being a Scottish channel ends then!
