The Wall Street Journal reported that Elon Musk ordered a slowdown of a version of SpaceX's Starlink that Ukraine has relied on in its war with Russia, capping the speeds at which Ukrainian hardware could stay connected. The Journal said the speed cap left some Ukrainian drones virtually inoperable. According to the Journal and cited U.S. officials, Musk discussed the move with multiple senior Trump administration officials and with President Donald Trump before imposing the new limits, and Trump later said he did not know who ordered the interruption but wanted to find out. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly complained that the slowdown weakened Ukraine's defenses, prompting an informal White House investigation, the Journal reported. Musk wrote that Starshield systems, the military-grade version of Starlink, are "owned and controlled by the US government" and that any speed or usage limits are decided by the U.S. military and ultimately the president, the Journal and CNBC report.
