Trump expected to lift some Canadian tariffs to help Susan Collins

The White House moved Friday to exempt some Canadian products from President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs in a targeted bid to help Maine Sen. Susan Collins and other Republicans ahead of the midterm elections, the Wall Street Journal reports. Documents posted on the White House website show duties will be removed for certain agricultural and forestry items, including specified machinery, refrigeration products, packaging and plywood sheets. At the same time the documents impose 50% tariffs on other Canadian goods such as carpet, certain valves and waste products. The Wall Street Journal says the change could come as soon as Friday and frames the shift as intended to aid Collins’s reelection prospects. Sources told the Journal the adjustment may raise levies on some categories while easing costs for U.S. buyers of the exempted farm and forestry inputs.
