BBC edits out pride pins on University Challenge contestants

The BBC and ITV Studios digitally removed LGBTQ+ pride pins worn by two University of Leicester contestants, astrophysics student Samuel Carlier and history student Emmeline Hague-Wright, from a University Challenge episode originally scheduled for BBC Two on 24 August and delayed twice before airing on 7 September 2026. The pins removed included the progressive LGBTQ+ pride flag, the bisexual pride flag and a rainbow feather. Sam said the decision felt "very Orwellian" and called the removal "weird" and "absurd," asking where the broadcaster would draw an impartiality line if he had worn a rainbow shirt. Sam says he contacted the BBC, was directed to file a complaint online, and has received no explanation for the edit. Emmeline said she expected support after being contacted about online transphobia to a previous episode but was instead told her feather pin would be removed and that the episode would be delayed. The Leicester Gazette reported Emmeline and Sam questioned the expense and effort of digitally altering the footage and described the pins as barely visible to viewers. Stonewall UK statistics cited in the article note that two in five LGBTQ+ students hide their identities at university and more than 36 percent of trans students have experienced hostile conduct from university staff.
