Bird of the Day, theme 'Brown Birds'

natureOct 25, 20261574,091

Aerial chases and skirmishes dominated the alternate reading, notably an osprey pursued over a pond in Longmont, Colorado. The main prompt asked for birds with mostly brown plumage, answered by intimate portraits such as a female mallard resting her bill at Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, and by skulking species like a Tawny antpitta in Ecuador.

A Dunnock perched on a bare Elder branch in side profile. The bird is close up, centre of frame and looking right so that its right side is visible. It is peched on a branch that runs diagonally from bottom left to top right of the shot. The branch is pale with small dimples throughout. The bird has a black, thin, pointed bill. Its head is bluish-grey with a brown patch around its dark eye. The back is dark brown and streaked with black, the wing feathers are dark brown, black at the tips and edges. The breast is bluish grey and the sides are a fading brown; both ar streaked with black. The underbelly is whitish. The bird is plumped up into a ball so that the legs are hidden, only the back and longest front toes and claws can be seen wrapped around the branch. There are two smaller branches running diagonally along the left hand corners in the foreground and two running along the left and behind the bird in the background. The rest of the background is an out of focus green, turning to yellowish-green at the bottom

Photo by Kort Duce An osprey fishing above a pond is chased by a territorial red-winged blackbird at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado. In this vertical color photograph, a territorial red-winged blackbird chases an osprey away from its wetland territory. The osprey dominates the frame as it flies in left profile, veering toward the camera with its beak open, appearing visibly agitated by the smaller bird’s attack. Close behind, the red-winged blackbird flies with its wings fully extended as it banks to the left in pursuit of the much larger raptor. The clear blue sky provides a clean, uncluttered backdrop, characteristic of Colorado’s 300-plus days of sunshine each year. An intriguing bird-in-flight photograph capturing a territorial male red-winged blackbird defending its territory against an osprey above a wetland habitat vital to both species’ survival.

Swans are not always props in peaceful, idyllic scenes... They can be very aggressive ending in a clash of the titans.

The photo shows a brown bird in profile with streaked markings on its cream-coloured chest. It is standing on a rock mostly covered with a light layer of lichen, against a pleasingly out-of-focus background.

They have red, white and black heads, black and yellow wings and buff coloured breasts. On the right of the photo a Siskin with black, green and yellow plumage confronts a male Chaffinch who has blue and pink red plumage. Their wings are nearly entwined.

A brown dove perches high up on a curved, sunlit tree branch, leaning its body forward and tilting its head down to gaze toward the lower left. The bird’s plumage features rich, warm cinnamon-chestnut tones with delicate scalloped patterning across its neck and back, flowing down to a long, sleek tail illuminated by golden sunlight. Shadows dapple the smooth gray branches and scattered eucalyptus leaves around it, while the background glows with a soft, creamy bokeh of golden and cool-toned sunlight.

A female mallard duck stands on a low stone wall in profile, facing left, with a softly blurred pond and fountain in the background. The duck has mottled brown and tan plumage, a dark stripe running through its eye, and bright orange legs and feet. The warm sunlight highlights its feathers, casting a gentle glow on its body. Behind it, a stone retaining wall lines the edge of a calm blue pond, where a large water fountain sprays a soft mist into the air. Green foliage and autumn-toned trees are visible in the background, creating a peaceful park setting.
