U.S. pushes Viktor Orbán as U.N. secretary-general candidate

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Trump administration has advocated nominating former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán for U.N. secretary-general and has encouraged him to enter the race. Sources from three countries told the WSJ that Washington brought Orbán the initial idea and that a final decision is still pending. A Trump State Department official acknowledged the proposal “sounds crazy at first.” U.S. officials told the paper that Russia and China are believed to be supportive based on prior conversations, and the plan would be for Orbán to be a joint U.S.-Russia-China candidate. The WSJ notes that when the U.S., Russia and China all back the same person at the U.N. Security Council, that candidate usually prevails.

Just to underline the point that the Trump administration is anti-democracy, they are promoting the textbook exemplar for democratic backsliding to lead the UN. Also, good time to point out that the US has not paid its UN dues, and now owes it more than $4 billion. www.wsj.com/opinion/vikt...
