iPhone Duo buyers report inner-display cracks at hinge

Early buyers of Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, have posted photos showing inner-display cracks near the hinge after folding the device. Users report a sound and stiffness around the hinge when opening or closing, then a prominent line across the inner screen and in some cases loss of touchscreen function. Heise says reports collected on Reddit and by leaker Ice Universe surfaced over the weekend, though newsroom Duo units remain intact and Apple has not commented publicly. iFixit’s teardown points to an accordion-style ribbon cable and a stress point where edges of the thin display meet the central hinge support as a plausible failure area. Durability tests by JerryRigEverything and others showed sand ingress into the hinge that prevented full closure and bending that damaged the inner display; iFixit also found some test dust inside the hinge. Some affected customers have received replacement units, AppleCare appointments at Genius Bar are recommended, and the Duo is sold out through January which could delay exchanges. Repair costs have been reported in posts at roughly $999 to $1,499 for a damaged inner display without coverage.
