Diego Chara to retire after 2027 MLS sprint season

Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara announced he will play the abbreviated 14-match MLS sprint season from February to May 2027 and then retire at the end of that campaign. The sprint season consists of 14 matches, seven home and seven away, and concludes in May before the calendar flips. Posts celebrating the announcement called Chara the Timbers' "heart and soul" and "GOAT," praised his durability after outlasting repeated roster turnover, and suggested a statue or tribute. Supporters urged the team to win the sprint-season MLS Cup as a proper send-off and noted this will be Chara's final season with Portland.

Not to defend Gavin (you guys should have fired him way before you did) but MLS rules around player rights and catchment areas was a strong factor in clubs’ decisions around academies. Prior to summer of 2022, clubs had rights to all players in their catchment. The idea was to limit player movement
