Fleetwood Town stuns Arsenal, knocks champions out of Carabao Cup

sportsOct 27, 202642667

League Two Fleetwood Town eliminated reigning Premier League champions Arsenal from the Carabao Cup, beating them 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta congratulated Fleetwood for their atmosphere and said it was "a really sad day" for his side, adding he could not fault his players' attitude but they failed to convert numerous chances. Arteta also said he would review Max Dowman's red card on camera before assessing the incident and that the team will learn from it. He stressed Arsenal created so many opportunities they should have turned into a bigger winning margin but did not, leaving the margins tiny in a cup tie. Fleetwood progress to the quarter-finals by knocking out the champions in one of the competition's notable shocks this season.

But the real question, did Fleetwood's manager, Matt Lawlor, stay inside his technical area?

Noah Love2

Anyone who views this as an embarrassment is wrong. It is masterful management to make it look like you’re trying in Carabao but go out as early as possible. It’s a worthless trophy that jams up your fixture list. Klopp used to do this all the time.

Since Arsenal fan Keir Starmer was replaced by a Spurs fan Sagal Abdi-Wali, Tottenham are undefeated, Harry Kane has won the Ballon d'Or, and Arsenal have been knocked out the cup by Fleetwood Town

I’m loving this, I always want the underdog to win. In other news, my son is in bits. He’s an Arsenal and Torquay Utd fan….. I feel for him 😉😂

Martin Parker2

“Arsenal lose at Highbury” is a sentence I thought I would never hear again.

Bob Bear1

Actually quite a good game, as far as a neutral is concerned.

Fleetwood Town beating Arsenal would be a nicer story if Ched Evans wasn't involved.

Taking on Arteta as a bench coach for Pep was obviously part of a very long con from City that culminated in this moment.

Compare what whoever that nobody was from Fleetwood Town did to Max Dowman to what Dowman did in response. The disparity in level of force, violence, and danger is comical given the resulting punishments.
