The Wildlife Trusts announced they have reached a £30m fundraising target to buy and 3,800-hectare Rothbury estate in Northumberland and begin rewilding and nature recovery. About 25,000 members of the public contributed roughly £17m to the campaign, which launched two years ago after Max Percy, the Duke of Northumberland’s youngest son, put the estate up for sale. At nearly 15 square miles, Rothbury is the largest single-owner block of land to come up for sale in England for more than 30 years and the trust called the purchase a “once-in-a-generation opportunity.” David Attenborough thanked the public for their support and Northumberland Wildlife Trust chief executive Mike Pratt said he felt “elated” and “humbled” by donors’ backing. The trust plans habitat restoration and targeted interventions to boost species such as mountain bumblebees, red squirrels, water voles, pine martens and curlew, and aims for Rothbury to become the “beating heart” of a 40-mile nature corridor from Druridge Bay to Kielderhead and Whitelee Moor. Local volunteers are already running projects such as eco-acoustic monitoring and the trust expects increased nature tourism and community engagement in Rothbury as restoration proceeds.
