At a Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump publicly rebuked his former lawyer Alina Habba Mildon, calling her reported $50 million contract to help secure a presidential pardon “totally obnoxious and outrageous” and “not acceptable.” The contract, reported by The New York Times and described to reporters by Trump, allegedly guaranteed Habba $10 million a year for four years plus bonuses and began in January, weeks before Trump granted a full pardon to Venezuelan banker Julio Herrera Velutini for misdemeanor campaign finance violations. Trump told reporters he told Habba he did not want her paid and denied that he personally asked her to donate part of the money, though he acknowledged telling aides he expected “many people” to make contributions to his projects. The Hill notes Herrera founded Bancrédito International Bank & Trust and faced 2022 charges including conspiracy, bribery and fraud. Trump said Habba “used her relationship” to press the family and called the size of the payment “far too much.”
