Matt Damon and David Letterman make a six-second, non-speaking cameo as background actors in the Season 4 premiere of HBO drama The Gilded Age, appearing on a New York street about eight minutes and 33 seconds into the episode. Damon, 56, wore sideburns and a bushy moustache while Letterman, 79, appeared with a full beard; neither has dialogue. The cameo was arranged as part of research for Damon’s forthcoming appearance on Letterman’s Netflix programme My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, which Isabel Richardson said tied into Letterman’s origin story and Damon’s early work as a background actor. Production secured the bit through a line producer connection to the HBO series and sought approvals from executive producer Kate Churchill, creator and showrunner Julian Fellowes, HBO head of drama Francesca Orsi, and CEO Casey Bloys. Churchill said the appearance was filmed on a closed set in a tightly controlled shot to avoid distracting viewers, and Damon was paid as a background performer through his company. Both Churchill and Richardson described the day of filming as playful, with Letterman excited on set and Damon laughing so much he had to hold his moustache in place.
