Sam Altman says home PC RAM should be in data centers

techNov 2, 202670148

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told the Cheeky Pint podcast (via IGN) that "from a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer." Altman argued individual PCs rarely use all their RAM whereas data centers achieve higher utilization, so memory would be better pooled to serve AI workloads amid a global DRAM shortage. The comments provoked public pushback, with a Reddit thread cited in coverage pushing back against Altman's view and criticizing AI companies more broadly. Analysts quoted in the reporting expect RAM shortages to persist for years, a dynamic that is already driving up consumer component prices and will make building or upgrading personal PCs more expensive going forward.
