Democrat Scott Colom projected victory in Mississippi’s U.S. Senate race after his lead over incumbent Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith widened to about 1,138 votes, with totals reported as 464,926 to 463,788. Election officials say roughly 3,600 absentee mail ballots and thousands of provisional ballots remain to be counted, with canvassing expected to continue through November 10. Hyde-Smith said she believes she is ahead and will remain senator, according to Mississippi TV station WLOX; Colom responded, "Bless her heart." Colom’s campaign said it is prepared to litigate and has an "army of lawyers" if necessary. National Democratic organizations and allied outside groups spent about $15.5 million supporting Colom. Independent candidate Ty Pinkins said he did not intend to hurt Colom’s chances. The Congressional Black Caucus PAC issued a congratulatory post that has not changed the official status; state officials have not called the race while outstanding ballots are tallied.
