David Jones enters voluntary administration after 188 years

newsNov 5, 202618121

David Jones has gone into voluntary administration after 188 years, with the retailer’s future described as highly uncertain. Shops remained trading in places while some floors and outlets were already cleared within hours as customers rushed to spend gift cards. The company employs more than 6,000 staff across 38 stores and faces imminent closures of some underperforming locations after rent talks broke down with its primary landlord Scentre Group, owner of Westfield. Chief executive Erica Berchtold said there is a well developed plan to reset the business and that David Jones will work with administrators, receivers and its secured lender. Consumer Policy Research Centre chief executive Erin Turner urged people with outstanding gift cards to spend them immediately. Administrators will review the business while trading continues under receivership as decisions about store closures and staff outcomes are determined.

David Jones once offered beautiful displays, knowledgeable staff and genuine service, then capitalism stripped away the experience in pursuit of profit. Now it's collapsed under the weight of endless consumption and cheap online shopping. Perhaps we need less shopping, not better shops! #auspol
