President Donald Trump confirmed he met at the White House with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev on Thursday, saying “there’s going to be an agreement, it’s going to be a big agreement” that could involve more than Ukraine and might include all of Europe. Dmitriev was on the premises for an event hosted by first lady Melania Trump recognizing a six-day ceasefire in Oleshky that ran Oct. 27 to Nov. 1; he thanked the first lady for her “distinguished humanitarian role” and said Putin personally gave instructions for the operation. Trump declined to give details of his one-on-one meeting and said he did not meet with visiting Ukrainian officials who were also at the event; the White House did not immediately comment on why. Ukrainian speakers at the event included Davyd Arakhamia, who praised Melania’s work, and human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets. The meeting came as U.S. envoys were holding talks with Ukrainian and European officials in Brussels; Jared Kushner said the Brussels talks were productive and the United States will hold three-way talks next week in Abu Dhabi with Ukraine and Russia, the first trilateral peace discussions since February. Earlier in the midterm campaign, Trump struck a deal with Putin to remove sanctions on Russian diesel exports, a development the article cited in context of his broader negotiations with Russia.
