Report finds burning wood for power worse than gas, even with carbon capture

scienceApr 20, 20265406

A Nature Sustainability paper found that burning wood for power with carbon capture produces higher CO2 emissions than burning natural gas without capture. The authors conclude biomass BECCS is likely to increase emissions for decades and will not deliver negative emissions within 150 years. The paper estimates electricity from biomass BECCS would cost about 3.5 times more and directly challenges UK government plans to subsidize BECCS at plants such as Drax.
