Former Brexit official Philip Rycroft urges UK to consider rejoining EU

politicsApr 24, 202611999

Philip Rycroft, WHO led the Department for Exiting the European Union from 2017 to 2019, said Britain should consider rejoining the EU because none of Leave’s 'heady promises' had materialised. Rycroft said the British public was 'falling out of love' with Brexit and called for a 'clear-headed appraisal of what is in the country's best interest.' His position, coming from a former senior Brexit official, raises the prospect that rejoining the single market, customs union and freedom of movement could return as mainstream policy options, with significant implications for trade and migration policy.

Britain should rejoin EU, says man who led Brexit department Philip Rycroft, who oversaw the Department for Exiting the European Union from 2017 to 2019, said none of Leave’s ‘heady promises’ had materialised www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

“Take back control of our money, borders and laws” they lied. Then trashed our economy, implemented an immigration policy that pissed absolutely everyone off - for different reasons - and created a business-ruining, trade-resistant, red-tape nightmare when they tried to bin off UK/EU regulations.

When are these people going to be held accountable for the damage Brexit has done?

Carl H13

All just complete and utter cobblers and not a single person has been held accountable any of it…Look to realign with EU/Europe and rejoin at some point but cannot openly admit how shit it really has been..🙄

Mr RobertBob12

It's blindingly obvious to everyone except the Labour party.

Richard M.10

We all knew that none of Leave’s ‘heady promises’ would materialise...

tim9

It's because they were ALL lies. Why doesn't he say that?

Chris McGrath9

He’s like Olly Robbins. They were really Remainers but their job was to ‘deliver Brexit’ with the minimum harm. They failed because it was impossible. 🇪🇺🇬🇧

I think the way forward is not to target these individuals with “this is your fault”, I mean it is, but it's prob best to acknowledge that some people had opinions at the time and now we need to help them feel they can openly support returning to Europe. I can see them digging heels in again is not

No promises were kept, no red buses with £350 million arrived, and no unicorns materialised. We should hang Boris Johnson and David Cameron in Trafalgar Sq.

Mister Dac4

He is one of the guilty parties. He was part of Brexit implementation. Will he ever face up to his responsibilities?

Foreversideways3

Never forget it was Mr Toad who led us into the Brexit mess ably abetted by the clown Johnson. Do not even think about voting for reform, they aren’t on your side and you will regret it. Man of the people 😂😂

Pete Armstrong3

Jeez, every day someone else who was involved in Brexit now confirms the whole 'experiment' which was believed, was flawed and should be reversed. It has cost the UK so much already, it will take decades to reach previous levels.

Mr P2

Almost like running a campaign based on “anything can happen and it’s definitely better than we have” wasn’t a good idea, particularly when traditional media failed to examine it well, giving equal weight to experts and paid fauxsperts

Mx Xs2

Imagine needing a whole panel of men to declare and validate the obvious fact that Brexit was a scam. Anyone with an ounce of sense knew this from the start.

Can we say ‘We told you so’ ?

Iacovos2

Any Brit with two non-racist braincells to rub together knows the UK should never have left the EU and should rejoin as soon as possible

Chris Nimmo2

I agree : Britain should rejoin the EU.

Paul H2

None? What about blue passports?!

A Civil Servant... applying policy. Not a remainer. Not a leaver. He APPLIED Government Policy. Now he can speak openly and honestly to appropriate questioning.
