Tom Steyer urges jailing ICE agents, reframing 'Abolish ICE' debate
Tom Steyer, a candidate for California governor, urged jailing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents WHO violate detainees' rights, proposing criminal penalties rather than only abolishing the agency. He framed the move as a shift from the 'Abolish ICE' slogan toward holding individual officers criminally accountable for abuses. The proposal comes as an interfaith clergy group in metro Phoenix is asking ICE to release seven detainees with serious medical conditions, underscoring ongoing concerns about treatment in detention. That reframing could reshape policy debates in the California governor's race and national discussions over immigration enforcement and accountability.
Tom Steyer is no dummy, and he has a canny set of proposals to propel his gubernatorial campaign in California. It *might* be enough. The latest edition of Huddled Masses from @adriancarrasquillo.bsky.social:
He might end up in second place in our ranked choice system. I’m team @xavierbecerra.bsky.social as are many of my progressive friends.
Don’t vote for a billionaire. Vote for Xavier Becerra!
He may have good ideas but really just another morbidly wealthy person wanting to buy an election. Becerra has on the ground experience , excellent track record and is the right choice.
It’s a start, but I’m thinking it’s time to get ahead of the curve… Billionaires should not exist.
Except in the debate he was asked to name one thing he wished current gov had done differently. His answer was he hadn't really been following what he had been doing. Really? He wants the top job and he's not following the issues? California deserve a better Democrat
