newsApr 24, 20268232

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani established New York City’s first Mayor’s Office of Deed Theft Prevention and appointed attorney Peter White as director. The office will crack down on deed theft, the practice of fraudulently taking ownership of others’ homes, by detecting scams, protecting vulnerable homeowners, and pursuing recoveries. Mamdani launched the office after deed theft drew attention when Councilmember Chi Ossé was arrested while protesting a Bedford-Stuyvesant eviction, signaling a stepped-up city focus on enforcing against housing fraud to keep New Yorkers in their homes.
