Active shooter taken into custody after White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting
An active shooter at the White House Correspondents' Dinner was taken into custody after shots rang out outside the venue while attendees sheltered under tables inside the ballroom. The Secret Service detained the suspect before they reached the ballroom and escorted journalists, political figures, and staff to safety. After the incident, Donald Trump pressed for access to the WHCD ballroom he has sought. The episode underscores persistent gun violence risks at high-profile political events and will prompt tighter security and renewed debate over public safety.
There was a mass shooting this morning at Indiana University that has left nine injured. The Indiana Daily Student has been facing pressure by Republicans and school administrators to shut down the print edition all year. Why isn't Donald Trump or legacy media corps reporting about this huh?
"Your hated rival school offering to print your censored edition with their own presses and John Revere-ing the copies across the state through the middle of the night to ensure a big investigation could be seen by homecoming alums" is not a sign of a healthy democracy
Cause it doesn't promote the message of a useless vanity project of a baIIroom.
"Wounded by bullets" is an interesting way to say "shot"
Obviously they need a ballroom.
This needs a lot of qualifying. The shooting took place downtown and they have not confirmed that any students were involved. Some of us have good friends and loved ones at IU. Characterizing this as a mass school shooting causes unnecessary fear and panic.
Wouldn’t have happened if the university had a ballroom.
They're too obsessed with reporting on how their lives were in danger from a shooter on an entirely different floor of a D.C. hotel who was already pinned down by law enforcement.
It seems though this was off campus by possibly some non students who got in a fight, so not sure how this is connected to censorship of the paper?
Too busy talking about how affected they are by hearing gunshots in a lobby near them
Has this been four major shooting events four days in a row now this week?
Simple reason. Neither DJT nor his media corps need to use the mass shooting to clamor for the "necessary ballroom."
"safety for me but not for thee" shouldn't be our gun control policy but it sure feels like it 😔
It’s the guns, it is always the guns, if the guns were not there, this would not happen. “The city said investigators have determined by reviewing footage that a fight broke out between two women in front of Five Guys, during which several people drew handguns and two separate people fired weapons.”
IU is going to need a bigger ballroom
We need to shake up politicians to the reality of gun violence by not hiding the gruesome result of their actions. People need to see what these guns do.... no one ever does unless you witness it...
Back in my day, we were all too drunk during Little 500 weekend to fight and pull a weapon. Now we are sober in our late 50s.
They'd much rather grasp pearls about the fake, staged one from last night.
An America destroyed by madness was on full display after the chaos of an assassination attempt at the WCHA dinner, in a nation so numb to gun violence and so drunk on corruption that Trump and journalists wanted to party on Gunfire of the Vanities: My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/trum...
The would-be assassin was no closer to killing Donald than I would be if I threw an acorn at the TV.
Here's an excerpt -- read the whole column during the Sixers-Celtics timeouts and tell me what you think
In light of the obvious gun problem, we need bunkered ballrooms at all our schools.
There was an active shooter in a public place. Happens all the time in the U.S. Do we call it an assassination attempt when active shooters enter schools, hospitals, houses of worship, or workplaces?
The shots were fired on a floor above the ballroom where the event was… let’s not get that lost in the details
In a room full of journalists, very few seem to be reporting that the gunman was on a different floor than the main event when apprehended. So he did not fire anywhere near the cabinet. And, in a country with more guns than people, calling for regulating speech instead of guns is total lunacy.
When Trump admin cries about how terrorized they felt remind them they wanted to keep partying.
Trump keeps saying accused shooters are “whacko,” and “sick.” But no one in the White House press corps asks him about mental health funding, or keeping guns out of the hands of mentally ill persons. Why isn’t this the obvious line of questioning?
bsky.app/profile/fred... Journalists who do not bring THIS horrific National horror back to the forefront after a bloviated, malignant Predator-in-Chief and Republicans, who are complicit in attacks on democracy, experience a GOP-enabled 2nd AMD crisis are themselves COMPLICIT.
🎁🖇️Opinion by Will Bunch @willbunch.bsky.social Gunfire of the Vanities: Trump dinner shooting defines a violent, unserious America Another Trump assassination try leaves dinner guests wanting to party on, in a laughingstock America, numb to violence. share.inquirer.com/nZykZM
Maybe we should all re-watch Brazil.
IT WAS NOT AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT! SHOOTER WAS NOT NEAR ANY OF YOU FFS!
There was no assassination attempt. He was not even on the same floor as the ballroom. Trump was never in the presence of gunfire.
…g r e a t title.
BLOTUS immediately exploited the event as a 'casus ballroom'...Not gonna happen. Can we be sure the shooter will not be Ruby'd or Epsteined? I'm not.
The journalists stole the wine instead. @angrystaffer.bsky.social @jaketapper.bsky.social @oliverdarcy.bsky.social
Most of your post is fine but the bit about the assassination attempt has not been proven.
yes, they wanted to resume the dinner
The only solution to a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a ballroom.
Something is for sure numb to gun violence and drunk on corruption, but speaking as a member of the nation, I push back on the idea that it's the whole nation.
There’a a restaurant scene in the great Gilliam movie “Brazil” that predicted this numbness.
“Gunfire of the Vanities”! If only Tom Wolfe was still alive. His biting satire and masterful use of language would have gone a long way to making the last decade more bearable.. and may have helped avert the worst of it.
Leaders last night experienced what it feels like to be a student in school dealing with an active shooter. Unfortunately, the current occupant of the White House is delivering the wrong message from last night. We don't need a ballroom sales job. We need a determination to end gun violence.
I’m sorry if this offends anyone but they experienced none of that. They’d only experience it if an active shooter was actually in the ballroom area and there weren’t armed FBI and SS agents to rely on. It’s evident by their reactions afterwards.
I hate that Trump is trying to garner sympathy with multiple fake attempts while Uvalde kids were left to die.
I was one of the first generations of kids to do a shooter drill. I'm sorry but they hardly got a taste. They had armed security, swat teams, and secret service on hand and at the ready. School children have none of that and often don't even have a competent police department to do a single thing.
Leaders last night experienced what it feels like to be in a trump reality show. I don't believe for a minute this was a real shooter situation. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, and I am absolutely in your corner when it comes to gun control, but I have no trust in our leaders.
Leaders and also the news media, who have failed to do their part to fully, honestly, urgently report on the epidemic. Instead we will have endless TV discussion of THEIR trauma and disingenuous editorials about political violence.
Actually not so much. The shooter last night was neutralized with seconds. If it was analogous to an active school shooter, Trump, Vance, and the like would have been hiding under the tables for 2 hours while texting their families that they love them as if they would never seen them again.
tRump said: “I don’t like to let these sick people, these thugs, these horrible, horrible people change the fabric of our life, change the course of what we do” School shootings change the fabric of our students lives!
Exactly. He thinks that having bullet proof windows would safeguard him from someone shooting up the ballroom from the inside? Reminder, no one inside the ballroom was in danger from the shooter. The only injury was a secret service agent at the metal detector.
Steve Scalise was shot and he still supports the NRA! 😳
So he wants to protect himself but doesnt care about the every day American threatened by gun violence!
I mean, they were surrounded by armed security, which kids don’t have access to. I feel bad for the kids.
Don’t know who she is. But this is brilliant.
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooter’s manifesto suspiciously has four pages praising Elon Musk. I suspect it was written by Grok.
If Musk wasn't so dependent on Trump for his SpaceX gig, he would have spilled the beans how he gave Trump a guaranteed win.
Looking unsurprised & unworried about anything, huh? Is this even a real pic? Or is he just waiting to get his shoes 🙄
This never got much coverage. Weird. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
Yeah. And they say he's a Liberal? Ummm 🤔 no!
Agreed! Hating Trump and Musk are one in the same.
A suspect has been arrested after firing shots at a security screening area at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night. n.pr/3QNxh4x
Did he fire anything? The security footage says no.
Kids in schools across the U.S. have to deal with this trauma in real life. Meanwhile, this administration sets up these stunts to fire up the base and a ballroom. #fdt
Staged so Trump could push for his ballroom. He won't get it!
This country is so lame
Does anyone think this wasn't b.s.?
hoping the next one has better aim
When the distraction from a distraction of the distraction needs another distraction. Release the Epstein files.
Good to see Epstein Files and Iran off the front pages finally!
Trump is turning the White House Correspondents dinner shooting into a tacky sales pitch for his $400 million ballroom.
Good point. The Ballroom would not help the larger security problems. Even if the Correspondents dinner was held there. And their behavior was very strange.
Just another fake, staged shooting. He was on Truth Social so quick. NORMAL people would be shook. Then to address the people and promote the ballroom. It's not adding up. Then to say he was honored to be in the 'assassination' club. Uhhhgggg!
The man accused of opening fire at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner railed against Trump administration policies and referred to himself as a "Friendly Federal Assassin" in writings sent to family members minutes before the shooting. https://to.pbs.org/3OZJWRo
The only thing I believe are the pictures I've seen after the fact when everyone is smiling, laughing, and giddy.
"Friendly Federal Assassin" is kinda on the nose, dontchathink? What kind of "assassin" comes up with the genius plan: "I'm gonna Leeroy Jenkins run through the lobby, down the hall, up the stairs, down the stairs, down the hall, Naruto run across the ballroom, up the dais and shoot the President?"
In a Trump world of constant chaos, this barely raises a pimple.
Worst Assassins Ever Association Member fails completely. You hire the worst, you get the worst. Red flag? 🚩 🤔
