California billionaire tax gets enough signatures for ballot

politicsApr 27, 2026152,881

Backers say they collected enough signatures to place a one-time 5 percent tax on Californians with $1.1 billion or more in assets on the November ballot. The proposal would tax net worth above the $1.1 billion threshold at 5 percent and is backed by a labor union that led the signature drive. Opponents have launched competing ballot measures to block or replace the billionaire tax, making November a direct voter decision on whether California can impose a one-time wealth levy on its richest residents.

NEW: The SEIU-UHW says it has collected 1.5 million signatures to put the Billionaire Tax on the ballot in California this November. That's nearly twice the required amount. www.nbcnews.com/politics/202...

CA billionaires are about to spend more money trying to defeat this than they will have to pay in taxes if it passes

Bill13

Oh no! Don't piss off the billionaires! They will get big mad and threatened to move away. Just kidding, fuck them

We did it in MA. And got $1.3 Bn for school lunches, and Transportation. Yes, it is controversial but the money is good.

Everyone who owns a home pays property tax. Every year, based on its value. At some level accumulated wealth should be perceived as property and taxed every year

With Mamdani calling for similar taxes it's gathering real momentum and a long overdue step toward the leveling of fiscal equity.

The “billionaire tax” initiative seeks to implement a one-time 5% tax on the assets of Californians whose net worth exceeds $1.1 billion. It would also require the state to spend the resulting revenue almost entirely on healthcare.

I never sign those petitions since many ballot measures are extremely flawed. However, I literally ripped the pen out of the canvasser’s hand to sign this one. Pay up or GTFO of our state ya rich dicks. So over it

We in CA are fed up with the Billionaires not paying their fair share and gaining riches on the backs of hard working people.

If only Newsom wanted it

You'd get the same response if signatures were gathered in all 50 states, w/o doubt. There were multiple polls done while Joe Biden was President, it polled very high among the American electorate. Joe Biden pushed for it repeatedly, btw. Always pushed for fairness + policy for the ppl, always...

Billionaires can live like kings with a 95% tax rate. Don’t believe them if they say otherwise. 5% leaves them with a minimum $50m. Zero fuxx.

Excellent! Well, you know what I always say:

Gov Ferguson of WA State signed a millionaires tax into law in March 2026. The amount of poor MAGAs rushing to defend the wealthy is staggering. Of course, there will be plenty of court battles over it. I don’t think it goes into effect until 2028, though.

When I make money, I have to pay taxes, why can't they? They use tax loopholes to not pay taxes and that is not fair to the rest of the tax paying populace. Fuck em and make them pay!! I will vote for this to pass.

I’m a Californian. I am not a billionaire. This is stupid. California already had a progressive tax rate. The billionaires who live in the state pay into the system. The billionaires who have fled the state, and moved don’t. Want to raise additional revenue, then do what Mandami is doing in NYC.

Idaho has a petition for restoring women’s healthcare going around. The state is rejecting every signature they can. My dad has signed it twice but his hands are so shaky his signature has changed. I hope the GOP does not contest all the signatures

What billionaire is going to pay $50 million for the privilege of keeping California their state of residence?

paul lukasiak2

Sad to see that Katie Porter is opposed to the tax…

NannyGoat7-112

Will they all move to private island s?

alwaysthetomboy2

Every state should do this ‼️🙏🤞
