The body of the text says, “After the 2008 financial collapse, in which millions of Americans lost their jobs and homes while the federal government bailed out investment banks with no meaningful consequences, the grassroots protest movement Occupy Wall Street grew rapidly to express the people’s disillusionment with income inequality and systemic corruption. Their slogan ‘We are the 99%’ drew supporters from across the political spectrum, and the main camp in Lower Manhattan became a living experiment in non-hierarchical organizing including basic services, a free library, and daily assemblies to discuss what they believed democracy could and should look like. This revolutionary approach inspired Occupy protests in over 900 cities worldwide in just a few weeks. The same broad background and direct democracy approach that made OWS inspire so many first time activists also made it difficult to come to consensus on specific demands or strategies. OWS refused to engage with traditional electoral politics due to the obvious corruption in both parties; which in turn meant both parties cheered when police and establishment media spread rumors to justify breaking up the camps. We may never know if OWS would have reached an actionable strategy given more time, but activists today should study the smear tactics used by both law enforcement and agent provocateurs in order to succeed at changing material conditions for working people where OWS failed.”
