J. Craig Venter, the genomics pioneer who helped decode the human genome, died at 79, the J. Craig Venter Institute announced April 29, 2026 in La Jolla, California. Venter led Celera Genomics' private effort that produced a draft human genome sequence in 2001 and later built the first synthetic bacterial cell in 2010. He founded the J. Craig Venter Institute and companies including Celera and Diploid Genomics to commercialize sequencing and genome synthesis. His work accelerated sequencing, launched ocean and personalized genomics projects, and helped create synthetic biology, reshaping medicine and biotechnology worldwide.
