Kemi Badenoch criticised for using Bloody Sunday footage
Kemi Badenoch posted a Conservative Party video praising British Army veterans that included archival footage from the 1972 Bloody Sunday killings in Derry, Northern Ireland. The footage appeared in a clip opposing reforms to the Legacy Act, and the Conservative Party said it removed the video as soon as it was made aware. SDLP MP Bairbre Holmes and relatives of Bloody Sunday victims called the use "disgusting" and "disgraceful", saying the soldiers' footage of unarmed civilians reopens painful wounds and complicates debate over how to handle legacy cases from the Troubles.
The level of disrespect would be shocking but it’s Kemi Badenoch so it’s not remotely surprising. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
The English part of me says, “Fucking Tories”. The Irish part of me says, “Ignorant and contemptuous, made worse when she deleted the post”. Either way, I’m not surprised.
What I find mad is, clearly a whole team of people were involved and not one said "hmmmmm are we ansolutely sure this is a good idea?"
You think you’ve seen it all from the Tories, the levels of stupidity and ignorance they’ve already plunged into .. then Bad Enoch takes over ..
They are so inept. “We apologise for the inclusion of this material, which should not have been used and will not be used again.” What did they think it was? Where did they think it came from?
“It featured Ms Badenoch speaking directly to camera, overlaid in part with archive footage - including a clip from Bloody Sunday. Thirteen unarmed civilians were shot dead by paratroopers in Derry’s Bogside on January 30 1972” www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/politic...
Because they just don't care. Because they can't be bothered. Because rhetoric is more important than truth. But mostly because she's an idiot.
Why...why do it in the first place?
Now I may be biased because my dad’s from Derry, but what I can’t understand is why there would be a large number of voters who want to give soldiers impunity *within* the UK (not that they should have it overseas, but clearly lots of people do think that).
Empty words without contrition... they just keep doing it until they are stopped, usually by their own party. Which shows the state of the party that she the best they can offer
The British right really doesn’t understand N Ireland Farage: up the Ra Brexity types: everyone hates the protocol (pro Windsor Framework parties win every election) Badenoch: to make my point about legal jeopardy for Army veterans, here’s some footage of Bloody Sunday www.bbc.com/news/article...
I think John Major had a good handle on it, but that was another era.
The British right doesn’t actually care enough about NI to try to understand the place or the people, as witnessed during the various Brexit fiascos Their use of NI as a political football is something else entirely
