hollywoodreporter.com56th anniversary of the Kent State shootings
Getty Images released newly surfaced photographs as communities mark the 56th anniversary of May 4, 1970, when Ohio National Guard troops fired 67 rounds into a crowd at Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder were the four killed during protests against the U.S. bombing of Cambodia and the broader Vietnam War. The shootings, captured in John Filo’s Pulitzer Prize photograph of Mary Ann Vecchio kneeling over Jeffrey Miller, sparked nationwide student strikes, deepened public opposition to the war, and still shapes debates over campus policing and government use of force today.
A survivor of the Kent State Massacre rings the bell on campus today, May 4, at exactly 12:20, the moment his classmates fell, 56 years ago.
Addendum. The man ringing the bell is Russ Miller, the brother of Jeff Miller, one of the Four Dead. Jeff was shot through the mouth as he shouted "Guard off campus!" He was 265 ft. away from the soldier who murdered him. Jeff was dead before he hit the ground.
Never forget and keep the memory alive. As us old geezers age out, the lessons of this tragedy must continue to be taught and passed on. In the same way that the majority of people have embraced authoritarianism without understanding the horrific history it brings about for all.
What if you knew her and Found her dead on the ground? How can you run when you know?
One of the great, and never mentioned, ironies of this... Most of those in that Guard at the time were in it as a way to avoid going to Vietnam. In essence, they were legal draft dodgers killing anti-war protesters. I was a year back from Vietnam when this happened, a bit biased, yes.
‘Ohio’ · Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (Live, 1970) youtu.be/VOFNLQtEWZ8?...
I remember the day and still think of it often. Never underestimate how bad it can get.
I remember that as if it happen yesterday. I told myself the Vietnam War is over that day, a spike was put in America's heart that day.
I remember, right outside of Lake Hall, my dorm.
When they vilify boomers they forget how many of us were in the streets for equal rights voting rights and just to be allowed to live our lives as who we are. Many were brutalized doing so & some were killed. Almost everything fought for by so many those days is going down or at risk. It's brutal.
Was in high school. Teachers were crying along with students So many young men dying in Vietnam...and for what??? Had a mass protest/ sit-in the next day. Fuck the governor of Ohio...what an asshole Rhodes was
I stopped there when traveling cross country in 2022. Things were still pandemic-y, so it was me and that whole area to myself. It's way smaller than it looks in photos, and I had to immediately leave the spot from where the Guard fired. I'm not woo, but it felt like hate
Hmm. I counted about 14 rings of the bell in the clip - is that of any commemorative significance?
Too bad Kent State University effectively disbanded the student-led May 4th Task Force after they supported the Black Lives Matter movement and honered victims of police violence such as Tamir Rice in 2016.
On this Fourth we remember the State murdering it's children not some damn movie
It was the result of a political stunt gone bad by Governor Rhodes. May he rot in hell.
Sorry I missed you, I was hanging back in the shade with Dean Kahler.
Kind of breaks me a little bit to think that the people who had to live through that should have to live in such dark times again
I was one year old. Kent State is approx 35-40 minutes from my home. It hits hard…
Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming.....
56 years ago today, the Kent State massacre unfolded, where four students were killed and nine others were wounded for protesting the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia.
I was young, but I remember that it was awful 😞
I remember this well...thank you for posting it. Our fight goes on.
History repeats itself. Just not Ohio, but Minnesota.
I remember it well. I was still in high school but we were all protesting against the war. I am shocked by the people who said they should have all been killed. I did not know that back then. This clip brought me to tears.
I remember when this happened. It was horrific.
Like Trump, Nixon’s campaign was based on ending military conflict in Vietnam. We know how that went. We now see how this is going. As usual it’s the venom of the citizenry that keeps the momentum and intensity of the insanity. Looks like little has changed since I was 13.
Now they shoot ICU nurses and moms.
Yep I don't remember what happened last week but I remember this like it was yesterday 😪
I was 16-years-old, and my older brother took me with him. We weren't ever expecting anything like what happened. It has stayed with me my whole life.
I was 11 when this happened. I still remember seeing their bodies laying there after being shot.
I remember it well. I was absolutely shocked! Protests against the Vietnam war as well as for fair housing were ongoing all over my city and state.
On this day 56 years ago-May 4, 1970-Ohio National Guard troops opened fire on protestors at Kent State University during a protest of the Vietnam War and recent U.S. incursion into Cambodia. Four unarmed Kent State students were killed; nine others were wounded. Image: Valley News-Dispatch.
And don't forget about police killing student protesters at Jackson State, a Black college, a week later.
Tin soldiers and Nixon comin’ ……… Four dead in Ohio
The pic was taken by a student photographer, John Filo. The girl, Mary Ann Vecchio, had run away from a bad home life in Fl. The Fl govenor accused her of being "part of a nat'l organized conspiracy of professional agitators" and blamed her for the student deaths. She was 14.
Kent State does a wonderful job with their museum and memorial. They provide so much background and context. If you are ever in Ohio, it’s very powerful.
Some words take us back immediately. Dallas. Columbine. Sandy Hook. And, Kent State, which happened 56 years ago today. We remember "Four dead in Ohio," but let us also remember their names... Allison B. Krause, 19. William Knox Schroeder, 19. Sandra Lee Scheuer, 20. Jeffrey Glenn Miller, age 20.
What if you knew them and found them dead on the ground?
I remember it well. I was a senior in high school. Stunning. Still.
The kid in the next room in my UMaine dormitory had graduated from high school with Jeff Miller. Terrible time.
and 10 days later there was Jackson State College, Mississippi. 2 dead and 12 injured.
I was 14 and that event made me a peace loving hippie.
56 years ago the Kent State shooting occured on May 4, 1970 Four students were killed and nine others injured by the Ohio National Guard, when troops fired live rounds at students during a protest against the Vietnam War ar Kent State University It could have been me Singing...4 dead in ohio csn&y
Thank You for posting, Judith @judithbolyard.bsky.social "Ohio" - Crosby, Still, Nash, & Young youtu.be/JCS-g3HwXdc?...
I lived outside of Pittsburgh. Two of my older brothers were war resisters/ draft resisters and the FBI was at my kitchen table negotiating a deal to turn in my brothers. Civil unrest was everywhere. I remember crying so hard, so rebellious and so young in my teens. My dad kept saying, “Fuck Nixon!”
I remember like it was yesterday
I so well remember this.
Yeah .,Nixon .. wasn’t even half as crazy as trump
It has been 56 years since one of the most horrific things that has happened in my lifetime. The assault on free speech is ongoing. #KentStateMassacre
Neil Young - Ohio [Live At Massey Hall 1971] (Video) / neilyoungchannel www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdVM...
I was a college sophomore when this event radicalized me...this, and the murders at Jackson State, convinced me that it's not enough to be willing to die for a cause because the pigs are willing to oblige. For real change, a person needs to be willing to kill the oppressor.
I mean, Id argue Trump getting the military to make soldiers police US cities is worse, overall, for the country. Also we just basically had that, twice, maybe more with ICE, and look at the difference in just overall reaction in general between Kent St, and Alex Pretti
🎶 Tin Soldiers and Nixons commin' 🎶
4 DEAD IN OHIO ---- NEIL YOUNG --
"Tin soldiers and Nixon's comin' We're finally on our own This summer I hear the drummin' Four dead in Ohio" - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, "Ohio," 1970 Today marks the 56th anniversary of the Kent State Massacre. /1
Four dead, nine wounded, hundreds traumatized, zero charged. The more things change, the more they stay the same. 💔 #KentState
On the morning of May 4, 1970, members of the Ohio State National Guard, deployed on the order of then Ohio Gov. James Rhodes, opened fire on student demonstrators, killing 4 and wounding 9. /2
A lot of Star Wars fans are celebrating "May the Fourth be with you." I'm a Kent State graduate, so May 4, 1970 means something very different. You are very old if you understand the significance of this picture.
We are blessed to have lived long enough to remember or blessed to have read U.S. history or we are blessed to have learned in a decent school. I learned about this in undergrad from a professor who was also there. So now someone else will learn from your post. #History
I was 7 years old. I still remember this image.
Mid-40s and I certainly know this image well. I just don't have dates memorized for a lot of history. A day can be multiple things.
I am very old, but I had somehow not known this was the date. Thank you for the reminder.
remembering, understanding, but not that old ☺️
Kent State, #Ohio, May 4, 1970, decisively marked the end of the 1960s. Nixon kept us in a war that Bobby Kennedy would have ended had the CIA not killed him. 11 days after the 4 Kent State murders, 2 were killed at Jackson State. No one was ever held responsible. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MN_9...
I post it every year for the younger activists. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_St... Let's not forget the Jackson State shootings on May 15th, 1970, either. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson... Graham Nash explains the background politics of the song 'Ohio.' 3mins www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FzY...
My mom was there, so this was an influential part of my childhood I was looking through articles for the best link to post on the anniversary – only to discover KSU’s own website about it has been recently retooled in such a way as to deflect all blame to the students It’s a chilling revision
I remember that day like it happened yesterday.I was in junior high at the time and it felt like the world was ending. This event 2 years after the murder of MLK and RFK as well as the police riot at the DNC in Chicago, terrifying.
