56th anniversary of the Kent State shootings

newsMay 4, 2026764,593

Getty Images released newly surfaced photographs as communities mark the 56th anniversary of May 4, 1970, when Ohio National Guard troops fired 67 rounds into a crowd at Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder were the four killed during protests against the U.S. bombing of Cambodia and the broader Vietnam War. The shootings, captured in John Filo’s Pulitzer Prize photograph of Mary Ann Vecchio kneeling over Jeffrey Miller, sparked nationwide student strikes, deepened public opposition to the war, and still shapes debates over campus policing and government use of force today.

A survivor of the Kent State Massacre rings the bell on campus today, May 4, at exactly 12:20, the moment his classmates fell, 56 years ago.

Addendum. The man ringing the bell is Russ Miller, the brother of Jeff Miller, one of the Four Dead. Jeff was shot through the mouth as he shouted "Guard off campus!" He was 265 ft. away from the soldier who murdered him. Jeff was dead before he hit the ground.

Never forget and keep the memory alive. As us old geezers age out, the lessons of this tragedy must continue to be taught and passed on. In the same way that the majority of people have embraced authoritarianism without understanding the horrific history it brings about for all.

What if you knew her and Found her dead on the ground? How can you run when you know?

One of the great, and never mentioned, ironies of this... Most of those in that Guard at the time were in it as a way to avoid going to Vietnam. In essence, they were legal draft dodgers killing anti-war protesters. I was a year back from Vietnam when this happened, a bit biased, yes.

When they vilify boomers they forget how many of us were in the streets for equal rights voting rights and just to be allowed to live our lives as who we are. Many were brutalized doing so & some were killed. Almost everything fought for by so many those days is going down or at risk. It's brutal.

Was in high school. Teachers were crying along with students So many young men dying in Vietnam...and for what??? Had a mass protest/ sit-in the next day. Fuck the governor of Ohio...what an asshole Rhodes was

I stopped there when traveling cross country in 2022. Things were still pandemic-y, so it was me and that whole area to myself. It's way smaller than it looks in photos, and I had to immediately leave the spot from where the Guard fired. I'm not woo, but it felt like hate

Pyperkub3

Hmm. I counted about 14 rings of the bell in the clip - is that of any commemorative significance?

Too bad Kent State University effectively disbanded the student-led May 4th Task Force after they supported the Black Lives Matter movement and honered victims of police violence such as Tamir Rice in 2016.

It was the result of a political stunt gone bad by Governor Rhodes. May he rot in hell.

Kind of breaks me a little bit to think that the people who had to live through that should have to live in such dark times again
