WHO flags possible human-to-human hantavirus; Spain to receive ship
The World Health Organization flagged possible human-to-human transmission of hantavirus on the cruise ship MV Hondius, which is anchored off Cape Verde after authorities linked seven cases and three deaths to the vessel. Spain agreed to receive the luxury ship in the Canary Islands so sick passengers can be evacuated and treated, and the Netherlands has arranged a dedicated flight to repatriate some travelers. Health officials suspect the Andes virus, which can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome with fatality rates up to 50% and is the only hantavirus with evidence of human-to-human transmission, creating urgent infection control concerns for crew and close contacts.
VIROLOGIST: “It’s bizarre, Hantavirus almost never jumps from human to human like this. Usually it’s from coming into contact with rat feces or something.” CRUISE SHIP CHEF: “Yeah, that’s crazy, it must’ve mutated or something.”

(Chef looking at the ceiling and whistling tunelessly)
Please avoid the ratatouille and the brown acid.
It seems that the passangers started to feel symptoms one week after boarding, the incubation time for hantavirus is between 1 and 6 weeks and they were, before boarding, at a place in Argentina were is endemic, so, it pretty probable that they get it before the boat trip
🚨 JUST IN: Possible human-to-human spread of hantavirus detected on a cruise ship, warns World Health Organization Maria Van Kerkhove, head of epidemic and pandemic preparedness at World Health Organization, said there may be some human-to-human transmission occurring among very close contacts.
When there's still uncertainty regarding the hantavirus strain & mode of transmission, but the stakes in human health are clearly very high, why doesn't Van Kerkhove advise airborne precautions? bsky.app/profile/coza...
Good thing Bobby Junior and our CDC is so well prepared for any pandemic headed our way.
Then why are we keeping passengers on the ship?
Did she ensure everyone there's no airborne spread?
I think about outbreak scenarios a lot, but I have to admit I've never thought about potential human-human transmission of hantavirus on a cruise ship until now. This is unprecedented, and no doubt an absolutely terrifying situation for those onboard. www.cnn.com/2026/05/05/a...
"Such an evacuation involves two specialized, medically-equipped aircraft staffed by trained medical crew" Happily we learned from covid we can simply wash our hands to prevent airborne illness.
Words missing from the report: respirator, N95, HEPA, air cleaner, and airborne.
Reportedly, there's an Andean strain of hantavirus that can be transmitted between people. Very uncommon though: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....
