Takashi Tezuka to retire as Nintendo executive in June
Takashi Tezuka will retire as a Nintendo executive on June 26, closing a 40-plus-year career that includes directing Super Mario Bros. 3 and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Creators are producing tributes across illustration, pixel remakes, short animatics, comics, and cosplay. Much of the output spotlights Mario and Link, with frequent redraws of Super Mario Bros. 1-1 and the Light World to Dark World reveal, and additional pieces celebrating Animal Crossing villagers and Super Mario Bros. Wonder characters.
When I spoke to Takashi Tezuka back in 2023, he really emphasized that it was a time for Nintendo brass to pass the torch to a younger generation of devs who grew up with the franchise and had their own fresh perspectives. Zero ego there.
"I said to them, 'I’m really grateful that you're being protective of Mario, but I really want you to think about what Mario needs to be now. What do you think Mario needs to be in order to play it the way *you* want to play Mario.'” www.rollingstone.com/culture/rs-g...
He totally has a point. Mario doesn’t need to have been under the direction of the same men through his entire career. We need to have new people in charge of his games now.
[Retirement] Takashi Tezuka is retiring from his position of Executive Officer at Nintendo on Jun 26. Some of his most notable contributions include working alongside Shigeru Miyamoto to create games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda for the NES.
