NYT probe says Eurovision has been used as a soft power tool for Israel

The New York Times investigation found the Israeli government organized paid efforts to use the Eurovision Song Contest as a soft power tool, directing 'vote promotion' campaigns and diplomatic outreach to boost its entries. The probe says those efforts began years earlier than previously recognized and included thousands of dollars in spending on promotion, social media amplification and coordination with diaspora groups. Israel's 2026 entry, Noam Bettan's 'Michelle', performed in the first semifinal in Vienna on May 12 amid visible tensions at host venues and fan spaces. This matters because Eurovision's voting system and global audience give states a low-cost cultural channel to shape international opinion and national image.
