Endangered Species Day, advocates highlight habitat protection and laws
Conservation groups marked Endangered Species Day with nationwide campaigns, petitions from American Rivers, and outreach from organizations such as Born Free USA to defend habitat and the Endangered Species Act. The IUCN Red List now covers 172,600 assessed species and finds 28 percent threatened with extinction, and American Rivers warns about habitat loss threatening roughly one quarter of freshwater wildlife. A 2024 study found that decades-long removal of plastic debris reduced entanglement rates for endangered Hawaiian monk seals, and supporters point to the Endangered Species Act for recoveries of bald eagles, sea turtles, wolves, alligators, and manatees. Defending habitat and legal protections matters because it prevents extinctions and preserves fisheries, clean water, and iconic species for future generations.
