Marchers cross Pettus Bridge invoking John Lewis
Thousands of demonstrators crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma and marched toward Montgomery today as part of the "All Roads Lead to the South" rally. Speakers invoked Congressman John Lewis and echoed his call to "get in good trouble" while demanding renewed federal voting protections after the Supreme Court curtailed major Voting Rights Act protections two weeks earlier. Marchers chanted "We are not going back," some called to rename the Pettus Bridge for John Lewis, and organizers framed the action as a push to convert civil rights legacy into immediate voting policy and a June 2 get-out-the-vote effort.
