WHO declares Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda a global emergency

scienceMay 17, 2026341,419

The World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, identifying the Bundibugyo virus as the cause. Health authorities report the outbreak has killed more than 80 people and produced about 336 suspected cases, with infections detected across the DRC-Uganda border including cases in Kampala and a case in Kinshasa. There is no vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, so WHO's emergency declaration is mobilizing international coordination and urgent containment measures to prevent wider cross-border spread.
