All charges dropped in 'Broadview Six' anti-ICE case
I figured there would be shady conduct with the Broadview Six grand jury, but it's unreal. Vouching is bad enough, but dismissing grand jurors who disagreed with them, hiding a no true bill, and hiding pages of the transcript from the judge? That should be disbarment. That's WAY beyond sanctionable.
Looking forward to reading about how the Broadview Six all file a claim with the new 'anti-weaponization fund' because this situation certainly seems to qualify them for compensation. (mostly sarcasm, but every journalist should pose this question.)
And yet the woman who at least did the vouching and may be partially responsible for dismissing the grand jurors who disagreed with them is now part of the Senate Judiciary Committee *Democratic* staff under @durbin.senate.gov.
disbarment with extra disbarment this is insane immediate suspension now and then do all the procedures and land on disbarment
Will attorneys for “Broadview Six bring those prosecutors before state board to have their law licenses revoked? They should, they must.
I keep having these moments where I think “huh so that’s why they banned that in the constitution“
What’s the count now, I wonder, on the number of rulings where judges have found Trump DOJ lawyers to be lying in court or otherwise putting a lie to the “presumption of regularity”… another overlooked massive scandal
Holy shit. I don't think I've ever even heard of anything that bad.
I mean, it’s just running the table of improprieties
Don Lemon’s legal team is currently racing to file to get access to the grand jury testimony
I hope other courts are paying attention. The presumption of regularity for this rotten-to-the-core administration should absolutely be abandoned.
What happened to law and order?🤔 Seems like Trump's cronies get away with stuff like this. No accountability.
Question from someone not steeped in USian legal procedure: does this level of misconduct provide any grounds for others prosecuted by the same prosecutors to request a retrial? As in "these mofos can clearly not be trusted with the presumption of regularity, all y'all get a redo"?
JUST IN: A day after the collapse of the "Broadview Six" case, attorneys for the former defendants have filed an emergency motion seeking preservation of U.S. attorney's office emails and texts about the case. A motion for sanctions will undoubtedly be filed down the road
Later… “Respectfully, your honor, the emails and texts had already taken off and were no longer in the state when you issued your order, so we felt no need to comply.”
There is going to be a lot more of this over the next few years. That is why the DOJ is having such a hard time getting lawyers to sign onto cases. Anyone who is smart enough to get through law school and pass the bar is smart enough to see what is happening is illegal as hell.
Expect spoliation of evidence. The higher-up lawyers are going to direct the lower level lawyers to take the heat and stall.
Feel badly that an AUSA 2 months on the job is going to take so much heat here, but until there are consequences for this misconduct (instead of pardons and $1,776M payouts) the erosion of the rule of law is going to continue unabated. Hopefully the pain goes way up the ladder.
A good start but aren’t we way way WAY beyond just sanctions here? Seems this was felony activity.
They should sue for some of that $1.8B
Disappointing they didn't include Boutros.
How the case of the "Broadview Six" ends: With jaw-dropping revelations — days before trial — that could haunt the Chicago U.S. Attorney’s office for years. My UPDATED @chicago.suntimes.com story on the permanent dismissal of their criminal charges: chicago.suntimes.com/immigration/...
Maybe Boutros should stop teaching at @uchicagolaw.bsky.social if this demonstrates this level of competence, management and ethics?
This is the Trump DOJ.
Very concerning detail here. Sheri Mecklenburg has shown she has absolute sh*t ethics, and is now a top Senate aide.
Even though it would be difficult, they should sue the prosecutor personally. There are clearly grounds for such a suit.
It should end w some lawyers being disbarred.
Nobody told me the "Broadview Six" included a Cat, a Kat, and a Rabbitt!
The US Attorney's office is now an ethical cesspool and no longer a legitimate advocate of justice.
Yeah, this office at least has torched its reputation. Really really bad behavior. We have to be able to trust these guys and now we can’t.
It’s served its purpose to intimidate & disrupt & destroy the lives of innocent people
I feel kike this is close to Skeletor Decimation, but...
Here's an additional mystery about the Broadview Six case. The original lead atty was career prosecutor Sheri Mecklenberg, a 20 yr vet in the Chicago US Atty office. In late Feb, with basically zero warning or discussion she withdrew from the case and was assigned to work on the Sen. judiicary ...
2/ committee under Dick Durbin. She made no mention that she'd be leaving in a court hearing earlier in Feb. There was really no explanation for the suddeness of the move. Or at least the lack of heads up. At the time I figured since the case seemed like such a loser maybe she just wanted out ...
Durbin can't retire fast enough.
Of course the new kid has every incentive to minimize his own culpability and blame the veteran Democrat too
@meredithshiner.com was discussing this in another thread. bsky.app/profile/mere...
Is Mecklenberg being shielded by Dick Durbin? Seems suspicious. We need answers.
Man what the fuck durbin
The government is going to lose the Broadview Six case. They’ve already dropped felony charges and they’re only taking misdemeanors to trial to save face. But it’s come at a tremendous personal cost to people who never should have been defendants at all. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/05/21/b...
And sadly, this DOJ will deem infliction of that pain to be sufficient to declare Mission Accomplished.
Andrew Boutros, the US Attorney, refused to drop the cases. He knows he should. Why doesn't he do it? Why send his line prosecutors to put on testimony they can't possibly think is truthful?
One thing that is genuinely amazing is how badly they keep fucking up the basic Authoritarianism 101 task of suppressing dissidents. The Broadview Six case, done to intimidate protesters, has instead become a bleeding wound that demonstrates their complete impotence at punishing dissenters.
And what's worse, the Broadview Six case also demonstrates just how humiliating and personally dangerous it is to be a MAGA Regime prosecutor. They will make you commit crimes in broad daylight that will stick around long after the regime is gone, and which could end your career *and* your freedom.
As it turns out trying the dualism of decades of American conservative oppositional defiance disorder and conservative anti-statism with a totalitarian monolithic super-state produces a thing neither fish nor fowl that terrorizes and makes people mad but can't do 'window breaks you.'
I like it that our wannabe evil overlords are dumbasses as well.
