Alligator Alcatraz detainees say guards denied food and water until signing English forms

Detainees at the Florida tented immigration site known as Alligator Alcatraz say guards withheld meals and clean water until they signed English-only documents they did not understand. Multiple detainees told The Guardian they were given 'rotten' water and kept in metal cages, and The Atlantic reported investigators found 'a pattern of deliberate neglect designed to dehumanize' along with punishments that may amount to torture. The Atlantic called the site a cruel and costly publicity stunt and said officials are weighing closure of the facility. Denying basic necessities to coerce signatures raises legal and human rights concerns and could prompt investigations and policy changes in U.S. immigration detention practices.
