Scientists warn a 'super' El Niño could disrupt weather and food supplies
Climate scientists warn a potentially record-strong El Niño could push tropical Pacific sea-surface temperatures more than 2°C above average through 2027, creating a 'super' event. Climate models show that rapid warming would reshape atmospheric circulation, driving droughts in Australia and southern Africa, severe floods in western South America, and intense heat waves across South and Southeast Asia. Analysts say those shifts will damage staple crops like rice, coffee and cocoa, threaten more than a tenth of UK food imports from heat stress, and amplify global trade and food-security risks. Governments, traders and humanitarian agencies should prepare for higher commodity prices, strained supply chains and elevated risk of food shortages.
I’m at the oil shock. I’m at the super El Niño. I’m at the combination oil shock super El Niño fertilizer shortages imminent famines historic droughts over half our oxygen lost to ocean acidification AMOC collapse portending a southeastern USA heat dome + Western Europe ice age
“If our oceans continue to acidify to the point of killing the plankton, which produce 50% to 80% of the planet’s oxygen, oxygen masks will become necessary for daily life” is one of those things that feels too bad to be true, and yet fact-checking confirms it. 🫠
Sadly, we're all on this shitty bus ride with you.
Only solution is a D I V E S T O L U T I O N !!!
Teaching environmental science last semester was especially harsh
Welcome to the club. The invasive plague species will get what Earth has in store for it. we reap what we sow.
Half of oxygen is not lost to ocean acidification. There is no creditable evidence we are losing half our oxygen. You just listed a bunch of fearful ideas that are not so likely with some that are likely.
?? What?? Where are these places? Fertilizer is easily made with compost. Just compost. Switch up crops. Plant peas with trees. It's not hard. All our small farms are teeming with Life, organic & we can bring our food scraps to the farmers market to be composted or in the yard waste.
Your cheery news reminds people of the reality of not being sufficiently warned by the current administration about the magnitude of the environmental punch we are about to experience. Living in denial has its perks until catastrophe strikes.
I know, truly I know what you're talking about. Many horrible things will happen. All we can do is keep pushing for change (which I do every day) WHICH IS HERE. April, 2026: solar & wind out-generated gas for the 1st time IN THE WORLD. proelectrica.substack.com/p/elite-cogn...
A powerful El Niño Event is expected to develop during 2026. How powerful? Well the seasonal forecasting models are currently all over the place. So, somewhere between a Top 10 event in modern history and super-bonkers extreme crazy land. 🤔 🧪🌊
The simple reality is that seasonal forecasting is hard (and relatively new), and many of these models are just going to be wrong. I'm expecting a strong El Niño event, and plan to follow the forecast updates closely, but remain very skeptical of the extreme upper end models.
Adopting "super-bonkers extreme crazy land" from now on - it's always good to know the technical terms.
