Oil tankers run 'dark' through Strait of Hormuz as US disables tanker
U.S. forces fired precision munitions into the engine room of the Palau-flagged tanker M/T Settebello in the Gulf of Oman, disabling the vessel after its crew refused to comply with orders. At the same time, at least 16 tankers switched off AIS transponders and clustered off Oman's coast to conduct ship-to-ship transfers, moving millions of barrels that had been stranded in the Persian Gulf. Traders and ship operators are using the riskier near-Oman route to push more oil through the Strait of Hormuz, increasing collision and pollution risks and complicating sanctions enforcement and naval patrols.
