Muslim delegates told to leave at Texas GOP convention
At the Republican Party of Texas convention in Houston, Mohamed Hussein, a Muslim Republican, was told by an attendee and a pastor to convert to Christianity or leave the United States and left the convention in tears after party members tried to expel him. Other Muslim attendees, including people with ties to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, were shunned and denied participation in delegate proceedings. The convention, held under the theme "Unity Drives Victory," highlighted the state party excluding Muslim Americans at a high-profile gathering ahead of the 2026 election cycle, undercutting efforts to broaden outreach to religious minority voters.
Texas GOP to American Muslims: Convert to Christianity or Leave America Yes, really. I wish I were being hyperbolic but I’m not. This is fascism in the USA wrapped in an American flag and carrying a cross. open.substack.com/pub/letsaddr...
I think that the people who want to violate the US Constitution should leave the US.
I've seen more Christ-like behavior from the Muslims in my life, so if any converting is going to be done, it should be in the opposite direction.
👋🏼 63y/o yt lady here… This is who the Republicans have ALWAYS been. They will never change. Please for the love of God my friends of color, stop falling for their lies. Democrats are your only option for multi racial democracy.
Texas GOP to the Constitution of the United States: We don't believe people should have freedom of religion. We deny the Constitution and freedom. #Texas #gop #religion
Gee, maybe they should have considered the naked fascism before joining the party that's been openly fascist since the 1960s. Maybe, just maybe, before signing up to help white supremacists fuck over people like them, they should have considered not being complete garbage people. Just a thought.
I can assure you not all Texans think this way. I am so ashamed that other white people think & feel this way! These are ignorant, small-minded idiots that have never had the opportunity to experience the beauty of diversity & the joy of knowing & appreciating people who don’t look like them!
So much for the First Amendment, but *why* does this guy *want* to join the GOP? Is he somehow unaware of how they treat non-whites? 1A: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". Texas GOP: "that don't apply to us white Texicans!"
This is a test. They know they’re going to get hammered in the midterms. They want the craziest goons to come out to vote. They know that if they want to have any power to stop or slow investigations at all, they gotta get the crazies out for midterms.
Even as they put their lives & their families’ lives in grave danger, I wonder if they still support the Maga Party.
"Mohamed Hussein...made the decision to attend the Republican Party of Texas Convention to confirm for himself that he had a place in the GOP....What he found was a party that didn’t want him. He arrived with hope but left in tears after being told explicitly that he should leave the country."
“When they say Sharia-free, that means Muslim-free, no practices of Islam,” Hussein said They are Christian nationalists. How are there still people that dont understand this?
I’m very curious as to why he’d think otherwise
I don’t get how he could be so oblivious to the obvious racism and religious discrimination. Why are some people so determinedly self-sabotaging? I simply don’t get it.
Everything about this leaves me melancholically sad.
Kind of makes a person wonder why this guy talked himself into approaching the party which loud and clear repeatedly blow their racist dog whistle emphasizing Barack HUSSEIN Obama.
Well…. There you go. No possible excuse for how they were treated. At the same time, one wonders exactly what they expected, attending a convention of a party that openly demonizes Muslims, as well as groups apparently this “conservative” Muslim would also demonize - including LGBTQ & immigrants.
I'm not sure what else the Republican Party has to do to convince people that they are only for white people. And they don't want women in positions of power either but can't get away with that....yet. God bless these poor folks.
The voters of the Leopard Eating Faces party are invariably surprised when the leopards, in fact, eat their faces. It is the nature of these voters.
Republicans. Texas. Two extremely racist and bigoted groups.
So....that whole Christian white nationalism thing the GOP wants to impose on America didn't put him off......dumb(with a b)
His first mistake was thinking that the GOP would ever welcome him
I feel bad for him, but leopards gonna eat (Texas, sheesh, followin’ the current guy’s lead, just goin’ for broke, no shame—god help us).
...eating faces... blah blah... not MY face... blah blah...
That Scarborough character is a jerk. I also don't believe for a second that all of their rattling on about Judeo-Christian values mean that they're not also hard-core anti-Semites.
“I would strongly advise you to leave our caucus,” George said. “There is a Democrat convention happening in a couple weeks. Join them.” - at least some Republican gave him this good advice. He should follow it.
I hope this is a learning moment for him.
When people tell you who they are, believe them.
of Course rethuglicans are racist, xenophobic, and amuse boogeyman sharia law every chance they get. AND were it not for their racism, xenophobia, sharia law boogeyman, and white supremacy, their emphasis on moral righteousness and authoritarianism actually appeals to some minorities!
I’m continually surprised when non-white, non-Christian, non-male GOP supporters are surprised to learn that the party of unabashed White Christian Nationalism hates them.
What did he expect from that bunch of bigots?
They were actually surprised? REALLY?
He's surprised the White Supremacist Party didn't want him?
What values held by the GOP appeal to Hussein? Did he go for the racism, misogyny and anti-LBGTQI stances just to realize the price of membership was denouncing Islam? He’s clearly not well educated in GOP policies and was foolish enough to think his mutual hate was enough for acceptance. 😢🤡😂
Muhamed Hussein, a loyal Republican from Texas, is also a Muslim. He went to the GOP state convention and quickly learned that Muslims are not welcome. www.texastribune.org/2026/06/15/t...
Living in Texas through the 1st trump regime, he really should’ve known better. Did he forget the Muslim ban?
How many times do you need to hear : “Leave. We don’t want you. You don’t belong here.”?? Not sure what would make Hussein believe he would be welcomed. The Texas Trump party is not quiet or secretive about their racism.
Stupidity folded in on itself repeatedly... a mille-feuille of stupidité.
“You’re going to find Muslims that aren’t being antagonistic or mean, at least not publicly. But I’ll guarantee, if they get power, they’ll cut your head off as believers of Christ,” [Pastor Rick Scarborough] said. Unbelievable. 🤦🏽♀️
Sad but far from surprising.
Texas GOP has a very small tent. Who else isn't allowed inside?
So he looked at what a group of misogynistic, anti democratic, blatantly corrupt, bigoted right wing reactionaries were doing in Texas and thought hmmm looks good I’ll join that. He’s no better and deserves only laughter.
So much for the GOP's former 'big tent'........
Paxton's attacks on Talarico are reminding me of what the great Molly Ivins once said of a Texas GOP Congressman: “If his I.Q. slips any lower, we’ll have to water him twice a day.” www.chron.com/politics/article/paxton-talarico-bbq-challenge-texas-22305739.php
[P] Goddamn, do I miss Molly Ivins.
That particular Texas GOPer was also quite a bit "grabby" even in public & she was the shero who warned me about it. Females in the know stayed 2ft+ away from his hands. I sure do miss her. Ditto Ann Richards & her daughter.
I cannot even begin to imagine what she would have to say about this “era”. I sure do miss her.
A Paxton comparison would be an insult to the gnarliest weed...
"It's like, duh. Just when you thought there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the two parties, the Republicans go and prove you're wrong." Molly Ivins
