US-Iran talks in Switzerland abruptly canceled
Switzerland's foreign ministry announced on June 19 that Friday's US-Iran talks at the Bürgenstock resort near Lake Lucerne will not be held. Iran suspended its delegation, citing Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and saying a condition in the memorandum of understanding had not been met; the United States also withdrew after Vice President JD Vance canceled his planned trip. The talks were to begin two days after Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum that opened a 60-day window to negotiate Iran's nuclear program and restart oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The cancellation endangers that 60-day negotiating timeline, the push for a regional ceasefire, and efforts to stabilize oil shipments and prices.
