Transport secretary Heidi Alexander urges Keir Starmer to set a departure timetable
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to set a timetable for his departure, the Financial Times reported. Alexander made the call after Andy Burnham’s victory in Makerfield, becoming the latest cabinet minister to press for a formal exit schedule. Her intervention raises pressure on Labour to outline a transition plan and could prompt a leadership contest if Starmer does not agree to a timetable.
Keir Starmer is now considering resigning after Cabinet Ministers called for him to step down He'll come to a decision with his wife and family over the weekend
If he goes he would make an amazing Foreign Secretary. Mahmoud should be binned😡
Burnham won't be a patch on Starmer on the international stage, imo. Starmer has improved our relationships brilliantly. AB will have the same financial constraints. Things take time to fix. The RW rags will still come for whoever is PM. Labour need to use their majority to reform the media.
Bastards. They wouldn't even be there if it wasn't for him. The chaos will really start if he goes and they'll be back where he dragged them from. Opposition
Well I’m telling him to talk to the 60% of Labour MPs who have supported him to date and ask them to continue until his term is complete. A change of leader now will lead to a rapid and disastrous general election for the Party.
Oh I so hope not!
No he mustn’t Burnham must be held accountable The members should have a vote
Running away to avoid a fight? To be fair, that would fit rather neatly with Starmer's entire time in office: unambitious, risk-averse, lacking vision, strategy and any real sense of direction.
Please don't. I don't vote Labour unless it is the only anti Tory et al vote, but he really has got so much done since his election. Or what have I missed?
So we get Starmer-bot 2.0 Burnham or anti trans Streeting?
I lent Labour a vote at the last GE but I doubt it will happen next time. They seem to conveniently forget why they were elected and start prevaricating over the unimportant stuff.
Don't think he should go just yet unless he's leaving them in the shite they deserve
I’m sure he’ll do what’s best for the country. Won’t he?
The media win! The steamroller will now move on to Burnham
Starmer has handled Trump brilliantly- but he’s believed the Epstein et al gang. I feel for him- I feel he’s a decent man with a great skills set- but my heart knows we need a leader who’s strong enough to not feel he has to attend parties given by the likes of Murdock.
BREAKING: Keir Starmer is considering resigning amid mounting pressure from his Cabinet in the wake of Andy Burnham’s by-election victory, according to reports. He is to consider his future as Prime Minister over the weekend.
"Over the weekend" A bit of a pisser if his kids already got him gardening gloves for father's day
For Starmer's behaviour over the Gaza genocide and his abuse of trans women and girls including his covering up of his pushing kids to suicide among many other sins his future needs to be a cell in the Hague.
Poor guy will have to destroy the lives of powerless minorities as a hobby instead.
The writing is on the wall, written in capitals. It's just a matter now of when he declares he's going.
Westminster leaders don’t last long! @number10cat.bsky.social how many PMs you chased out?
What a great start to the weekend!!
Oh come on. It's not like he was any less useless and pathetic before all this.
Impossible. He did exactly what Matt Yglesias promsed is a perfect political strategy.
I'm not sure if Keir Starmer is capable of making that decision, maybe somebody should make it for him
Sorry, what you mean is Starmer has to consult with his benefactors about the best way forward while hanging on to power. Labour have to clean house and remove the yes men/women from the party that are owned by the wealthy. Purge the right wing from the party.
To put it in Grand Designs terms, Starmer got the huge loan for the build, got into disputes with the (racist) neighbour, stalled in a boggy field. He's then tried to project manage it himself and lost the confidence of his family. The wife can hear wedding knells. He's got to make a tough decision
Exclusive: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been urged by his transport secretary to set a timetable for his departure, several government members told the FT ft.trib.al/WwGn3ZE
Well the transport secretary should know all about timetables ... insert your own joke here!
Why? Andy Burnham’s victory speech was just full of vacuous platitudes like ‘Hope’. His actual policies across Health & Social Care, Education, Defence, Immigration, Economy, Taxation etc. need to be laid out in a leadership contest - no coronation without rigorous examination please.
Maybe Heidi Alexander's constituents should petition for a recall - or she could just resign her seat. Any other cabinet ministers want to put their necks on the block or are you just pushing Alexander to the front? The PM gave you a job, Transport Secretary. How about doing that?
I hope KS wins and then the traitors can be sacked.
What’s the average period of grace for a new PM before political journalists decide they themselves can run the country better?
🚨 NEW: No 10 sources say Keir Starmer has a leadership campaign website "ready to go" should a contest be triggered
Anybody who has read his biography should have expected this, he was clinical in his approach first time round, nothing to suggest he won't do the same again. He's not afraid to let party members decide unlike Burnham.
While sources did not disclose the website’s URL, a domain name of keirforleader.com was registered last month It comes after The Times revealed last night that Starmer has amassed a six-figure "war chest" to fund his campaign
Robert Peston, "The Prime Minister Keir Starmer is sort of grieving because he knows he's finished" "He's going through stages of grief, currently going through the anger phase" "At least half of his MPs no longer support him" "All of his ministers are saying he can't go on"
I wish Peston was finished, statement of fact with no evidence.
Peston had time to thoroughly canvas 150 MPs
Oh how the media are begging Starmer not to go. 🫨 Yeah right. They will be after Burnham now. Any Labour PM who didn't steal £billions during COVID, unlike the Tories, is a target of the Right Wing MEEJA.
Nothing will change if his replacement is also a Blue Labour yes-man.
"As for me, I love the drama, and I'm in danger of ripping my cock off its fucking hinges"
** Senior campaign figures believe Starmer should be given time to set out a timetable for his departure, with Burnham not planning to announce any challenge in the immediate aftermath of the result. “We want to give Keir time and space to come to terms with the reality of his situation”.
** Starmer’s allies have discussed a “100m hurdles” strategy which involves throwing obstacles in Burnham’s way – such as the danger of losing the Manchester mayoralty, the fragile geopolitical situation and potentially a job offer.
Have they any idea how arrogant they sound ?Just appalling SKS has done the hard work and Burnham thinks he can sneak in by the backdoor He will have no mandate or credibility He will also split the party -so many members are furious with him and his friends
