Hannah Pingree and Bobby Charles clinch Maine gubernatorial nominations
Hannah Pingree won the Democratic nomination and Bobby Charles won the Republican nomination for Maine governor after state officials completed ranked-choice tabulations early Friday. Pingree, a former Maine House Speaker and climate policy leader, finished second in first-round preferences with about 23 percent but prevailed in the final round of the ranked-choice runoff. Charles held roughly an 18-point lead after Election Day and sealed the GOP nomination during the subsequent ranked-choice tabulation. The November contest matters because it will pit Pingree's climate and healthcare-focused platform against Charles's MAGA-aligned conservatism in a competitive statewide race that will determine control in Augusta.
very cool illustration of ranked choice voting and how it worked in Maine’s gubernatorial Democratic primary via www.reddit.com/r/Maine/comm...
i swear to god you guys
It's so simple and sensible, yet people make it seem incomprehensible. It works. It gives the voter flexibility to choose the preferred candidates without having to try to predict who will win and to avoid the worst choices completely.
unfortunately aella has ruined sankey diagrams for a lot of people, but ranked choice voting rules and it should be the norm
which one is the fluffer?
With california's wacky governor primary system needs ranked choice voting. Gore v Bush also needed this.
I know NYC started this trend of mislabeling Instant Runoff Voting as "Ranked Choice" (there are actually many ranked choice methods), but please make clear that you mean IRV. And IRV is a terrible alternative to FPTP. (IMHO, any FPTP alternative should at least include Condorcet)
these graphs are forever cursed for me
The winner of the Democratic primary for governor in Maine, announced just now at 1:48am by Maine officials after tabulation of ranked choice voting, is... Hannah Pingree. Pingree was SECOND in the first-round preferences on June 9th, with just 23% of the vote; but she won in final round of RCV.
Angus King was first eliminated under RCV, followed by Shenna Bellows, then Troy Jackson, and then (in the final showdown) Nirav Shah, who was ahead in the first-round preferences with 27%. Pingree, who is the daughter of U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, will face Republican Bobby Charles in November.
That’s basically the strongest argument for RCV: broad second-choice support can matter more than leading the first round.
RCV definitely requires different types of coalition building and strategies than the alternative. Makes for much more interesting politics.
Thank you to everyone who supported me along the way, and congratulations to Hannah Pingree, who will be a great Governor!
Thank YOU, Shenna, for all you do every day for the people of Maine! Can’t wait to see what’s next for you! So proud of, and inspired by, you and Maine’s other smart, strong women leading us forward!❤️🌲
Thank you for everything you've done for us!!!! 💙🌲
Thank you Shenna, I voted for you but we had an embarrasment of riches when it came to the candidates on our side this time. There is a place for everyone of you going foward.
Thank you for getting out there and building our coalition! Pass along some of those good Education ideas along!
Thank you shenna, I wanted it to be you or troy. But your three's solidarity with each other saved us from a bad candidate and I am so grateful for that
