cultureJun 19, 202631767

Opal Lee led her annual Juneteenth Walk For Freedom in Fort Worth, which began at Rogers Square after heavy rain delayed the start by one hour and pushed kickoff to 10 a.m. Lee, known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” spent decades campaigning and walking 2.5 miles in cities nationwide to secure Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021. The Fort Worth walk honors June 19, 1865, reinforces living memory of emancipation, and ties into renewed public interest in Juneteenth history highlighted by the graphic novel First Freedom.
