Broadcasters air commercials during World Cup 'match breaks' formerly called hydration breaks
U.S. broadcasters including FOX and ESPN have been running commercial blocks and branded segments during FIFA’s in-game hydration pauses, with some outlets now calling the stoppages “match breaks.” FIFA created the pauses to let players rehydrate in high-heat conditions, but games played indoors, such as Netherlands vs Sweden, still featured full midgame ad rotations. Networks vary their executions, some use split-screen to keep the field visible while airing ads, others insert music or sponsor content, and Ivory Coast manager Emerse Faé visibly used one pause to regroup his team. The change effectively turns guaranteed midgame stoppages into new advertising inventory, raising concerns that rebranding normalizes more commercial time and interrupts match momentum.
Netherlands🇳🇱 - Sweden🇸🇪 Hydration break... On a match played indoor 🙄 What a joke.... It's American commercialism ruining football.
American commercialism is destroying the country, the culture, and the world.
4 minute break for tv commercials. About time ITV / BBC call it out for what it is.
It's not commercials, they dumbed it down to short segments so that American audiences don't get bored. Oh, dumb with a "b" 🙄
A four minute break for an international television audience to get up and take a leak. This strikes me as a change but the destruction of some venerable institution.
Even the British commentators are referring to “quarters.” No no no.
They’re probably thinking they have to do it for all games to be fair to all teams But yea it’s just another way to make more $
Now we aren't totally to blame..FIFA is getting their cut as well.
We need to stop it here. If you're familiar with American sports, it's just the beginning. In American football, each half has a "2 minute warning" to run commercials. Commercials run when there is a potential injury or a replay challenge. It's unwatchable.
Conditioning becomes secondary. Don’t allow American influence to ruin the beautiful game.
As an American and a non- football fan, I agree this is totally ridiculous and a blatant money grab.
